Hash Value of a Video
Get the SHA-256 or MD5 hash value of any video file, of any size, without uploading it.
In short
- Select the video file (MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, 3GP, or a CCTV export) in the tool below.
- Keep SHA-256 selected and press [CALCULATE HASH].
- The 64-character code shown is the hash value. Copy it, or paste an expected value in the verify box to check it.
- For a document to file or attach, press [GENERATE REPORT] and download the PDF.
The file is read by your browser and never uploaded.
[1] SELECT FILE(S) TO HASH
Select one or multiple files to hash from your system, or drag and drop files below. Pick two files to check whether they are identical.
[2] CHOOSE YOUR HASH FUNCTION
[3] LAUNCH THE HASHING PROCESS
Need to keep this file private? Encrypt it in your browser with CryptFile.Online, the sister tool — nothing is uploaded there either.
What the hash value of a video is
A video's hash value is a fingerprint of the file, calculated from every byte it contains: the frames, the audio, and the metadata the camera or phone wrote into it (date, device, sometimes location). The same file always gives the same hash value. Change a single byte and the hash value is completely different.
It is not a fingerprint of what the video shows. Two files that look identical on screen can have different hash values, because the pictures were encoded differently. That is the most common source of confusion, and it decides which copy you should hash.
Which copy of the video to hash
Hash the original file: the one the camera, phone or recorder produced, copied without conversion. Copying a file to a computer, a pen drive or a CD keeps exactly the same bytes, so the hash value does not change.
These produce a new file with a different hash value:
- ›Sending the video through WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram or Facebook as a normal video: these apps re-compress it. (In WhatsApp, sending it as a document keeps the original file.)
- ›Cloud backups in a reduced-quality mode, such as Google Photos "storage saver".
- ›Trimming, rotating, muting or converting it (MP4 to AVI, for example), even with the phone's own editor.
- ›Screen-recording the video while it plays.
If you only have a forwarded copy, hash that copy and describe it as such. Its hash value proves what that copy contains, not what the original contained.
CCTV and DVR footage
DVRs and NVRs export footage to a pen drive, often in their own format (.dav, .h264, .264) and sometimes with a player program next to it. Hash the exported files exactly as exported, before converting anything. The [ OR SELECT A WHOLE FOLDER / PEN DRIVE ] option in the tool hashes the whole export in one go and the report lists every file with its path.
If you then convert the footage to MP4 to make it playable, the MP4 is a new file. Hash it too, and keep both hash values: the export proves what came out of the recorder, the MP4 is what people will watch.
Large videos and how long it takes
There is no size limit. The video is read in small pieces, so a multi-gigabyte file does not need to fit in memory, and a progress bar shows the speed. On a recent computer, SHA-256 typically runs at a few hundred megabytes per second, so most videos take seconds; a phone is slower.
A video still on a phone connected by USB is read through the phone's connection, which is slow. Copy it to the computer first, then hash the copy: copying does not change the hash value.
Hashing a video directly on a phone
Open this page in the phone's browser and select the video. On Android, choose it through the Files app or the gallery. On an iPhone, choose it through Files rather than the Photos library: when a video is picked from Photos, iOS may compress or convert it before handing it to the browser, and you would get the hash value of that converted copy instead of the original.
FAQ
Why do two copies of the same video have different hash values?
Because their bytes differ, even if they look the same. Messaging apps and cloud services re-compress videos, and editing apps rewrite them. Only an exact copy of the file keeps the hash value.
Does renaming the video change its hash value?
No. The file name is stored by the file system, not inside the video, so renaming or moving it keeps the same hash value.
Can I get the hash value of a YouTube video?
Not from the link. A hash value belongs to a file. A downloaded copy has a hash value, but it depends on the quality and format it was downloaded in, so two downloads of the same YouTube video often differ.
SHA-256 or MD5 for a video?
SHA-256. MD5 still detects accidental changes, but two different files can be deliberately crafted to share an MD5 hash. If you are asked for MD5 as well, select MD5 + SHA-256 to get both in one pass and in the same report.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is read and hashed by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which is also why there is no upload to wait for.
